I often thought of Brooklyn and Malverne as two different worlds. Brooklyn was crowded, loud, old and filled with odd, sometimes threatening people. Malverne was wide open, expansive, surrounded with woods, ponds, tall reeded swamps. I came to learn that innocence also lived in Brooklyn and dangers lurked in Malverne. I have tried to capture the mood and density of each through color and imagery. The transparent hexagonal shapes on the left side of the painting evoke the mosaic tiles in the vestibule of my grandparents' apartment on Chestnut Street in Brooklyn.
