At the Table

These are 6 artists who have profoundly inspired and influenced my own work. Clockwise: Rembrandt, Soutine, Goya, Matisse, Cezanne, De Kooning. At the center of this painting is the question: What is the purpose of art? Is it, as Matisse writes, to create an art “devoid of troubling and depressing subject matter,” or is it, as Goya clearly shows, to reveal our darkest selves?
