Hebrew Lesson

My mom was born in Sioux City, Iowa. At age 5 her family moved to Brooklyn. This is a story of Jewish migration from Russia to the American Heartland to Brooklyn and Long Island, from the wild west mythology of the American frontier to the hard streets of Brownville. I remember Grandpa Meyer putting me on his lap and jabbing his blacksmith fingers at the prayer book, trying to teach me the aleph bet. There's more than a casual nod to Willem de Kooning's Excavation in this painting.
