Sailing to Byzantium

I had been reflecting on Yeats's phrase “an old man is but a tattered coat upon a stick.” I was struck by the sad humor of his phrase and tried to capture the spirit of it in this painting — including the idea that the sailing ship was actually a donkey! And I wondered what memories were tucked in that tattered coat’s pockets.
